Greetings Family, Happy Black History Month, and thank you for reading this year’s Black History Month issue!
First, let me introduce myself. I’m Carla Beachem and I’m the new editor-in-chief intern for Black Ink Magazine! I’m a sophomore Journalism major here at UNC (s/o class of 2020). I PROUDLY represent Charlotte, North Carolina, aka The Queen City, aka THE 7-0-4. I’m extremely excited and even more honored to be given this position. Black Ink has been such a staple in my UNC career so being able to serve in this capacity is nothing short of a blessing for me. With that being said, I am ecstatic to bring this Black History Month issue to you.
As you can see in the cover photo, courtesy of our Black Ink February 1992 archive, this year’s Black History Month issue is full of stories displaying the power of black figures of the past and present on UNC’s campus, in the media, and beyond. Our writers have a treat for y’all this month. For all their continued dedication to this publication a special thanks to the Black Ink Staff and the executive board. This transition hasn’t been an easy one but I appreciate the support and patience y’all have had with me, so thank you a million times.
Finally, I’m sending my love to the one and only Dominique “#LonDom” Brodie all the way in England. For trusting me with your baby, constantly affirming me and supporting me in this transition, THANK YOU. I can’t express how blessed I feel to have this opportunity, so while you’re over the water living your best life just know that I’m over here holding it down and hyping you up more every day.
With that being said, here it is Family. Welcome to the Black Ink 2018 Black History Month Issue. I hope y’all enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed creating it.
Uhuru Ni Upinduzi,
Carla Beachem (’20)
Editor-in-Chief Intern
