The first annual BSM Fashion Show, presented Black Student Movement (BSM) is a new initiative lead by sophomore, Cameron Ulmer. Ulmer appreciates president Aaron Epps for giving her the courage to bring life to her idea to be part of BSM’s 50th celebration. Fashion is a way for every person to express their unique identity and style. Each participant is ecstatic to showcase their beauty that is diverse within the student population at UNC. You can expect to witness 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and modern day style that will blow your mind.
Expect an overall entertaining night with showcases from Opeyo!, Kami Kazi and “Blue Lighting,” a newly developed sub group of BSM. The goal is for each person gain appreciation for the cute, revolutionary, hip and trendy clothing from different decades. This is another way in which we commemorate 50 exceptional years of challenge and growth.
“Mia’s Closet Boutique was very influential in helping with gathering the clothes for the show, I’m forever thankful for their support” – Cameron.
Participants Kierra Pittman and Deshawn Dazevedo shared their thoughts about being a part of the show and the overall experience.
“I think it serves as a memorialization for those who came before us by allowing us to connect with them through their style, music and celebrate Blackness through decades” – Deshawn
Kierra is beyond ecstatic for everyone to see yet another way black culture is shown. In her opinion, the models outfits, hair and formations are all poppin’.
“It will truly be relatable, energetic, and a refreshing time!” -Kierra
It is very important to show the transformations of style and culture throughout the years of black students on UNC’s campus. It is critical to honor the past contributions of BSM in order to celebrate what the current generation is doing. With that being said, a sincere thank you to Cameron and all the participants in the fashion show for their efforts to make this event a success. Please come out and support this occasion TODAY, February 17 at the Stone Center from 5-7pm. Tickets will be available at the door.
