Since fall semester is well under way, I’m sure the pre-cooked meals that Big Momma made for you are surely long gone now. You are probably wanting to switch up the monotony of cup noodles and cardboard flavored spaghetti, am I right? Don’t worry, there are plenty of like-minded students here who are willing to share their easy college-level cooking techniques at UNC.
Last Saturday, I made my way through the bulletin boarded halls of Rams 4, following my gut and my nose to the very welcoming and delicious-smelling suite of Isatta Feika, Rachel Sargent,Tatyana Green, and Jeliyah Clark.
What I smelled fed my pores and quenched my flavor-thirsted tastebuds.
It was a night like no other.
It was…
Family Taco Night.
A night filled with zesty collaborations and laughter between good friends. Sargent was manning the stove when I walked in and I instantly drooled over the sight and smell of shrimp, beef, chicken (oh my!) and my first question was of course, “What’s cooking?”
Feika answered, explaining how this is their family dinner night. They each contributed something different to the meal and according to Feika, “it’s a way for us to get together and celebrate our happiness or at least each other”. Feika also admits that with the UNC boycott going on, her willingness to cook and have family dinners has increased.
With each person contributing, I just had to know what kind of seasonings they used. The list of seasonings follows as such:
Paprika
Black Pepper
New Orleans Cajun Seasoning
Garlic Powder
Cayenne Pepper
Nature seasonings
Adobo
Basil
For First-Years or non-cooking upperclassmen trying to make it through their year at Lenoir who want to start cooking eventually, the Chefs of Rams 4 suggest that you start off with the basics in seasoning. Get the salt, the pepper, garlic and onion powder, and the seasoning salt. Use their suggestions to spice up your night. Make your next night a family taco night.
