Hey y’all!
We’ve hit that point in the semester where the weather is hot one day and cold the next, you have three papers due in the next two weeks, all you can think of is Thanksgiving food, and finals are creeping up fast. Whether you’re a first-year finding your footing or a senior ready to sprint across the finish line, I’m here with some love and guidance to help you close this semester strong.
1. Protect Your Peace.
Burnout doesn’t make you productive, it just makes you tired. Between classes, work, and campus life, it’s easy to stretch yourself too thin. Make time for stillness. For example, put your phone on Do Not Disturb for an hour and give yourself a break. Don’t think of rest as a luxury rather an integral part of the plan. Remember that you cannot pour from an empty cup!
2. Plan Smart, Not Stressful.
A key part of finishing strong is planning with intention. Don’t try to do everything at once, break your tasks into digestible pieces. If you’ve got a 10-page paper, outline it one day, write two pages the next, and edit later. Study in chunks and switch from one class’s material to another: 30 minutes on Anthropology, 10 minutes off, 30 minutes on Biology, 10 minutes off. It’s about pacing yourself, not punishing yourself.
Also, please eat real meals and get enough sleep. Late-night study sessions at Davis don’t make you an academic weapon if they leave you drained. Fuel your body the way you fuel your ambitions.
3. Lean on Your People.
Community is everything, especially here at UNC. Tap into your circle when you’re feeling stretched thin. Study with friends, grab a meal after class, or check in with someone who makes you laugh. Feel free to reach out to the Black organizations on campus if you need to!
4. Use Your Campus Resources.
There’s no reason to struggle in silence. The Writing Center can help you polish your papers. The Learning Center can teach you better study habits. CAPS is there if you need someone to talk to. And if you’re not sure where to start, ask because there are so many people who genuinely want to see you succeed.
5. Reflect and Recenter.
Take a moment to recognize how far you’ve come. Celebrate your growth, your effort, and your persistence. You’re still here showing up, learning, and evolving. As you plan for finals, don’t just focus on grades; focus on growth.
6. Remember Who You Are.
Being Black at a predominantly white institution like UNC comes with layers– pressure, pride, and purpose. But never forget that you belong here. Your voice, your presence, and your brilliance continue the legacy of the Black Tar Heels who came before you. You are part of something powerful.
So, as finals approach, take care of yourself, pace yourself, and rest without guilt. You are more than capable, and you are never alone in this!
With love,
Your Big Sis
