Black artists are a different breed of fortitude.

Now, let me explain.

On January 30, Former Washington Post editor Marty Baron presented at the Frank A. Daniels Jr. Lecture hosted by UNC-Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Baron’s talk reminded me just how important the role of journalism is in today’s society.

He spoke about the immense amount of courage it takes to be a journalist and how important the career will be in future years.

How in an age built on opinions and growing polarization, it will
be increasingly important to find the full truth despite constant backlash.

Following the lecture, I began to think about what it means to be a journalist and more importantly, a Black journalist.

Being a Black journalist today means getting doubted at every turn. It means getting discredited when you write for Black publications. Pushing harder than others to gain respect in both our careers and daily lives.

It means upholding impartiality but realizing the importance of our racial backgrounds and what they can bring to a story.

The world needs Black journalists.

The world needs Black artists.

Black artists, in all forms, not only surpass expectations through their work but also serve as unparalleled sources of inspiration. Despite historical efforts to suppress our voices, we persist in
sharing and articulating our narratives.

On the journey toward recognition and inclusion, significant strides have been made. Black artists have courageously carved out spaces in realms from which they were once excluded. Yet, as they acknowledge their progress, they also recognize the road ahead is paved with challenges.

Today, in a world that demands courage and resilience, Black artists exemplify unwavering determination in dismantling contemporary barriers and biases within their craft. Their
commitment goes beyond shaping personal narratives; it serves as a beacon of courage in fostering a more diverse and inclusive artistic community.

In confronting the challenges of the present, Black artists inspire us to boldly challenge the status quo, fostering an environment where creativity knows no bounds and where the stories of all artists, regardless of background, contribute to a richer, more vibrant collective narrative. The courage displayed by Black artists today not only transforms their own artistic landscapes but also propels us all toward a future where inclusivity and creativity reign supreme.

So, like I said, Black artists are, and will always be a different breed of fortitude.
