What ignites your spark?
SPARK, a weekend retreat held September 30th-October 2nd, was designed to provide first-year women of color with the empowerment and motivation necessary for a successful transition from high school to college. Like most of the SPARK participants, I was anxious and nervous in anticipation of the weekend retreat, though I knew it would allow me to meet phenomenal young women, develop myself, and gain the support to face any challenge. All nervousness and doubt quickly vanished as the weekend unfolded. In the first few moments of the retreat we were introduced to a group of excited women who would serve as counselors and become our mentors, friends, and “big sisters.” We then chose “high-five buddies” whom we got to know and discussed what it means to be a woman of color at the University of North Carolina.
Saturday was packed with many group building and self-regulation activities that were controversial yet meaningful. I personally enjoyed a presentation by a panel of women who shared their unique experiences working at UNC. The panelists gave us advice on navigating UNC as women of color and, most importantly, understanding our worth while maximizing opportunities. During the evening we opened up and shared personal details of our journeys thus far without fear of being judged.
What an outpouring of love that followed!
Sunday was emotional because everyone felt the peace that came with a new outlook on our futures here at UNC. The SPARK weekend was an experience that has enriched my life with joy, direction, and new relationships.
On behalf of myself and my SPARK sisters, I would like to thank Program Director Seteena Turner and Program Coordinator Anyssa Reddix for having a vision and successfully executing an encouraging, motivating and inspiring retreat that will live on forever.
